Flight Route & Observation Area
Figure 1. Planned Route and observation area by the applicable airplane.
Prior to the promotion of the new atmospheric observation program, it was considered which airplane should be modified and which route or airspace those airplane will fly. (An example at the time of April 2004 is shown in the figure 1)
The green line represents the observation area of the CME and the pink line represents the ASE. The number shown at destinations represents flight times per month.
As for the ASE, it was planned to fly from Australia to Narita twice a month as previously conducted. On the other hand, the observation with the CME would be conducted based on the predetermined daily operational schedule without a rigidly specifying the route. It became possible to conduct the observation over the route JAL usually operates such as Asia, North America, Hawaii and Europe. The right side graph shows expected percentage of each observation area.

According to the operation data from November 2005 to January 2007 by the aircraft equipped with instruments(two 747-400 and three 777), the observation was conducted everywhere in the Southeast Asia, Europe, North America including Mexico and Australia. Specifically, it is noteworthy that the observing frequency of Southeast Asia and Siberia are among four regions of so-called area of insufficient observation on the earth. As for Mexico-city in Central America and Delhi in India, these obtained data is extremely important because little data is available, even on the ground.
Atmospheric sampling by the ASE from Australia to Japan was conducted successfully. Similar sampling flights with the ASE will be conducted for other routes if necessary.@
