Living things – in a dream and life catcher

The 15th World Children's Haiku Contest this year has also involved Lithuanian youth interested in making haiku.
The pleasure of creating poetry, aimed to express one’s personal attitude on here and now in three subtle lines of specific number of syllables, avoiding any comparisons, strict conclusions, just revealing something special on the topic, was supplemented by additional task of creating an illustration.
The theme "Living Things" might have seemed rather simple at first sight: there are so many living creatures around... Indeed, some young creators simply watched and reflected pets, wild animals, insects, plants, – but saw them first of all like the participants of environment, and not as the symbols with their power to talk about everlasting.
Though variety of insights is really interesting, in some cases images and texts don‘t fit together. And some of visions tend to be too mature, not naturally childish, or vice versa. Nevertheless, the material good as experiments.
But the most successful works are balanced, and the Haiku spirit presents.

The winner of the Grand Prize Leonardas Orlakas (age 14 Male) revealed his attitude by means of a spider hanging in the evening mist (forthcoming darkness, obscurity, calmness, or maybe anticipation of dawn?). A weaver works on various dreams (reality, experiences, wishes). So what bunch of thoughts, activities he summarizes? Existential loneliness, or the fullness of everyday life?

The same motive can be tracked in other ways, for example, as the second nominant for the Grand Prize Matas Zajauskas (age 14 Male) did by means of a rabbit: this cute being is shy and courageous, its path is full of dangers and discoveries, childish playfulness, valority and serious thoughts, long ears are catching the sounds of the world, wide opened eyes are observing – the path of life supposes an immense space of possibilities. In such a way living things open as living beings and talk about Life – the present, and the continuity.

生き物―夢と命をつかみとるもの

　今年の第15回世界こどもハイクコンテストには、俳句作りに興味があるリトアニアの子どもたちも参加しました。
決まったシラブル数をもった3行というわずかな詩行のなかで、対比させるだけでなく、はっきりとした結論を出すのでもなく、ただ主題について独自さを明らかにすることをめざして、今のこの場所に関して自分の気持ちを表します。また、詩を作る喜びに絵を描くというもう一つの課題も付け加えられました。
最初「生き物」というテーマはとても簡単そうに感じられました。まわりにはとても多くの生き物がいるからです。たしかに、子どもたちの中には、ただペットや野生動物や虫や植物を見て考えようとした人もいました。しかし別の人たちは、永遠を示す力をもった象徴というよりも、生き物をまず環境への参加者として考えたのでした。
　子どもたちの直観性は本当に興味深いものですが、絵と俳句がうまく合わない時もあります。また、絵のいくつかには自然な子どもらしさというよりも大人びていることもありますし、その逆の場合もあります。それでもかれらの題材は実験的で素晴らしいものです。
　もっとも成功した作品はバランスが取れて、俳句の心が表されています。

　大賞の第1位のレオナルダス・オルラカスさん（14歳男）は、夜の霧にまぎれてぶら下がるクモによって自分の気持ちを表しています。（夜の霧には、やがて来る暗さ、ぼんやりした景色、静けさ、あるいはおそらく夜明けの予感もあるでしょうか。）さまざまな夢を織るという句です。（夢は、現実、体験そして望みでもあります。）この人はどんな思いや行動をまとめあげるのでしょうか。世界に存在するさみしさ、あるいは毎日の生活の充実感でしょうか。

　同様の気持ちは別の方法でもたどることができます。たとえば、大賞第2位のマタス・ツァヨスカスさん（14歳男）は、ウサギで表しました。この可愛らしい生き物は恥ずかしがり屋ながら勇敢です。その行く手には、危険や発見、子どもらしい楽しさ、勇気、まじめさがいっぱいで、その長い耳は世界中の音をキャッチし、大きく開かれた目は大きな可能性に満ちた人生の道を観察しています。
　こうして生き物たちは自分の道を切り開き、現在とさらに続いてゆく人生を語るのです。
