第15回世界こどもハイクコンテスト（日本大会）には、国内外から前回よりも1,000件多い6,000件を超える応募がありました。海外からの応募が国内からの件数を上回り、海外でハイクへの関心が高まっていることが感じられます。
今回のテーマ「生きもの」では、身近な生きものをはじめ大自然で生きる動物や、動物園、博物館での出会いなど、さまざまな生きものが詠まれています。生きものに対する感動、共感、思いやりの気持ちなどが素直な、ときにユーモラスな表現で表されています。そうした生きものに対するいろいろな気持ちをハイクという詩であらためて表現できたことは素晴らしいことだと思います。
観察の行き届いた作品、楽しくユーモラスな作品、想像力豊かな作品、生きものと心が通っているような作品など、いろいろな作品がありましたが、特に、身近な生きものを詠んだ句には、こどもらしい優しさや純真が見られ感動させられました。大人になってもこうした気持ちを心のどこかに持ち続けてほしいと思いました。

There were more than six thousand entries of haiku for the Japanese convetntion of 15th World Children's Haiku Contest, one thousand more than the previous contest. Of the six thousands, entries from abroad exceeded those from Japan. This may reflect the fact that haiku is coming to be known better in foreign countries.
"Living things" was the theme of the contest this time. Various animals such as familiar animals we see every day, animals in zoos, wild animals, and even fossil specimen of extinct animals were popular subjects. The excitement, empathy, compassion and sympathy children feel are expressed in plain but impressive words, sometimes in a humours manner. It is really nice that so many children could express what they saw and felt in the short poem of haiku. I believe their pure and tender mind, which we want to share in all life, will impress everyone.

子どもたちにとっての身近な「いきもの」は昆虫、蝉の声、卵から育てたカブト虫、笑い転げるダンゴ虫、糸がつくれて凄いクモなどなど。また海のいきものも多く登場しました。ゴリラやシマウマなど動物園のいきものたちも人気がありました。植物は風景の中に溶け込んでしまいがちなのでしょうか、数的には多くなかった印象でしたがバラの棘、オジギソウのお辞儀、水たまりに映る紫陽花など美しい句がありました。
今回より現代俳句協会、俳人協会、日本伝統俳句協会、そして国際俳句交流協会所属の幅広い世代の選者が第一次審査にあたり、熱心な審査が行われました。第15回を数え、日本の伝統詩形である俳句と絵による「子どもたちの感性の発表の場」としての世界こどもハイクコンテストの役割がますます大きくなっていることを実感いたしました。

Living things close to the children and frequently appearing in their works include many insects: the cry of cicadas, the beetle kept from its egg stage, a laughing roly-poly (wood louse), a spider that spins thread, and more. Animals at the zoo are popular. Sea creatures are also found in many entries. Perhaps because the plants easily blend into the landscape, they did not get as much attention. However, several beautiful works focused on the thrones on roses, the bowing of humble plants, or the reflection of hydrangeas in a rain pool.
For this year's contest, preliminary selections were enthusiastically made by active members of the Modern Haiku Association, the Association of Haiku Poets, the Association of Japanese Classical Haiku, and the Haiku International Association. The World Children's Haiku Contest celebrates its fifteenth contest this year. Our responsibility for providing a place for children to express their art, both in traditional Japanese haiku and in painting, is getting more and more important.

選句しながら、人間も含めた「いきもの」の神秘に触れている、そんな気がしました。
いのちの輝きやあたたかさを、あらためて愛しく感じると同時に、もの言わぬ身の回りのいきものたちを見つめる子どものまなざしが伝わってきて、心洗われる思いでした。
たくさんのご応募に感謝いたします。

While I was going through all the works for the awards, I had the sense of getting closer to the secret of life, the secret of 'Living Things', including us, humans.
Life that shines and brings us warmth felt so dear once again, and also each work taught me or made me imaging how children look at the speechless living creatures around them so lovingly, which was a refreshing experience for me, and brought me back to life.
I greatly appreciate that so many of you sent us your work.

今回のテーマは「いきもの」でした。前回にも増して数多くの素敵な作品が集まりました。小さな子ども達からは主に身近にあるいきもの、少し大きくなった子ども達からはそれに加え本や博物館から得た知識から想像を巡らせたはるか昔のいきもの、国内国外で暮す子ども達からはその土地土地の風土や行事で出会ういきもの、と、実に多種多様ないきもの達が集まりました。伸び伸びと色彩豊かに描かれた絵と素直で飾らない言葉で表現された作品はそれぞれいきものへの愛に溢れ、子ども達の成長を見守る周囲のご家族や先生方の温かい眼差しを感じながらの選考となりました。

On the assigned theme of "Creatures" a great number of haiku works have been applied to the contest.
The little children' s haiku works express their love and curiosity to the familiar creatures such as dog,cat,little bird,insect,garden flowers etc.
Some of the elder children's haiku works are full of imagination to the ancient creatures such as dinosaur and Homo sapiens.
During the life in Japan or sometimes in foreign countries the children often get chance to be in close touch with various local creatures and express curiosity,friendship and love toward these creatures with colorful drawings and fresh haiku poems.
In process of work-selection I surely felt affection of their parents and teachers who always wish good growth of the children.
