モンスーンの季節、毎日のように見舞われるスコール。通りを賑やかに行き交っていた車も人々も一斉にいなくなりました。オートバイに乗っていた人は近くのカフェに入り雨が止むまでお茶を飲みながらゆっくり過ごしているのでしょう。カフェの店員さんはそろそろ止むかしらと外の様子を眺めているようです。人々は慌てず騒がずスコールが過ぎ去るのを待ちます。空から斜めに降ってくる強い雨と路上に止めた乗り手のいないオートバイの絵から、音も人も一斉に消えて時間が止まってしまった町の情景がよく伝わってきました。

Squalls happen almost everyday during the monsoon season. Streets that were filled with cars and people become deserted. A motorcyclist has gone into a nearby café to wait for the rain to stop while drinking tea. A café server looks outside to see if it will stop raining soon. People stay calm and wait for the squall to pass. The heavy rain falling diagonally from the sky and the motorbike parked on the road depict a town that has suddenly become deserted and quiet and where time has come to a standstill.

ハノイでは道端で熱帯の果物が売られていますが、６月が近くなるとそれにライチーが加わります。ごつごつしたやや硬い皮をむくと丸く透明に近い白い実が現れ、食べるとジューシーで上品な甘さが口に広がります。ハノイで味わう初夏の楽しみの一つがライチーで、窓から見えたら車を止めて買い求めたくなります。

In Hanoi street venders sell all kinds of tropical fruit. Litchi begins to appear among them as its season June approaches. Peeling the rough and stiff skin, the round and white, nearly transparent, fruit will appear. Juicy and elegantly sweet, it tastes fantastic. It is a summer joy in Hanoi. If you see the street vendors from your car, you can’t help stopping the car and buy them.

香港の活気あるマーケットです。店に並んでいるものの種類が多く、特に果物は、色も形も様々で見ているだけで楽しいです。通路にはみ出しているものもあります。この句は、「かけ声と色がはじける」と言ったことで、マーケットの様子が上手に表現されています。「ドリアン、マンゴー、スターフルーツ、みんなおいしいよ」という売場の声が聞こえてくるようです。

This is a bustling market in Hong Kong. Many kinds of fruit and vegetables are sold. Some stands stick out on to the passage. It is a fun only to see them. The scene of the market is vividly expressed in this haiku. You could easily imagine the scene of venders crying “Would you like durian, mango, or starfruit? They are all so good.”

刻々と変化する「朝焼け」の色合いと、「かげ」となって現れる塔や建物のシルエットの対比を発見したのですね。作者の観察眼が光っています。ごく限られた時間帯の「パリ」の表情を、「かげ絵」として繊細に捉えた作品です。

The artist discovered the contrast between the ever-changing colors of "sunrise" and the silhouettes of towers and buildings that appear as "shadows." The artist has a brillant eye for observation. This work delicately captures the essence of Paris through light and shadow during the short time lapse of sunrise.

家々の間を縫って高い丘まで細い階段が続いている町。夏の早朝は空気がひんやりとして、これから迎える一日の始まりにふさわしいすがすがしさに満ちています。階段の両側に並ぶ家々の白壁とその先のみどりの丘に朝の太陽の光が射してきました。新鮮な朝の空気を胸一杯に吸って階段を見上げ、さあどこまでも登れそうと張り切っている気持ちがしっかり伝わってきます。私たちも一緒に登っていけそうな気がしてきました。

The town has a flight of steps leading up hill. The air is cool and refreshing in the early morning of summer; a great start to the day. The sun shines down on the white-wall houses lining the steps and the green hills beyond. I can feel the artist's excitement of climbing to the top, while taking a breath of fresh air and looking up at the steps. I feel as if I can make it to the top, too.

家の近くに町の神社があって、春には桜が見事だ。鳥居よりも大きな桜の絵からは、立派な枝振りの老木だと見て取れる。満開の桜の下では、家から歩いてきた僕が両腕を広げて立っている。「わー、きれいだ！」という声が聞こえそう。右下に小さく、二階建ての僕の家も見える。町一番の自慢の桜である。

The cherry blossoms are very beautiful at the shrine in the author’s neighborhood. From the picture of the blooming cherry tree, which is larger than the torii gate, I can see that it is an old tree with magnificent branches. Under the cherry blossoms in full bloom, the author is standing with his outstretched arms, “Wow, it's beautiful!” I can hear his joyful voice in awe. His two-story house is in the lower-right corner of the picture. The image conveys how happy the author is with this grand cherry tree, the pride of his town.

みずみずしく楽しい発見のある作品です。絵本のなかの一場面にも見えてきて、「かも二ひき」がお財布を持って「パンや」に買い物にきたのかも、と愉快になりました。作者も、親子やきょうだいなのかな、パンが好きなのかな、と想像したのではないでしょうか。

The drawing is fresh, fun and full of discoveries. It looked like a scene from a picture book. It was amusing to imagine that the two ducks were carrying purses and going to the bakery to do some shopping. Perhaps the artist drew them as a mother duck and duckling, or a pair of ducklings, who liked to eat bread.

「音だけひびく」から、「夕立」の大きさと共に、作者のおどろきの大きさがよく伝わってきます。いつもの見慣れた「アーケード」の印象が一変した瞬間が、ありありと感じられます。

The words, "Only the sound was heard,"expressed the author's surprise as well as the intensity of the evening shower. You can clearly feel the moment when the downpour transformed the familiar shopping arcade.

きびきびとした言葉が並び、爽やかな秋の朝の空気感がある。丁寧に書き込まれた絵から消防署だと分かる。朝九時の消防士達の車両点検が始まる。まずは灯火の点検。「右、よーし！」「左、よーし！」「ハザード、よーし！」力強い声が秋空へ響いていく。町を火災から守る消防隊員は僕らのヒーローだ！

The words are crisp and clear, and we feel the air of a fresh autumn morning. I can tell from the carefully drawn picture that this is a fire station. At nine o'clock in the morning, the firefighters begin their vehicle inspection. First, they check the lights. "Right, good!" "Left, good!" "Hazard, good!" Their strong voices echo in the autumn sky. The firefighters who protect the town from fires and other disasters are the town's heroes!

五感を使って詠まれた句。「青葉かがやく」とまぶしさを視覚で捉えただけでなく「木々の歌」で聴覚で葉音をも捉えたことで、美しく快い「バルセロナ」の光と風が伝わってきます。町の一瞬の表情を、全身で受け止めた作者がすばらしい。

The haiku was composed through the five senses. It visually captured the glare of the "shining leaves" and the sound of rustling leaves, that is, "the song of the trees."
