In the past, wells in Japan were shared by the community, as in the words “Idobatakaigi” (well-door meetings). It was a place where people who were engaged in household chores could exchange information. There may be various topics of gossip, but the rumors in the world of this haiku are more suited to cheerful ones. Someone is in love with someone else, a baby is about to be born in someone else's house, I thought of such rumors. The crayon and pencil illustrations are beautiful with their pale light colors. Long clotheslines tied to the eaves of neighboring houses, posts, and garden trees. The laundry of each house is hung out to dry there and is swept by the wind. Although this haiku is not seasonal, it evokes an ancient poem, “Spring has passed and summer has come, and the white clothes are hanging out to dry on Amano Kaguyama” (Emperor Jito), and the mood of early summer is in the air.
