朝顔の花がひらくときって、どんな音がするのでしょう。「ポンッ」、「フワッ」、 それともとても静かな「スー」でしょうか。ほんとうは聞こえないはずの音なのに、 耳をすませて想像してみたくなる句です。朝顔は、朝になると大きく花をひらき、す ぐにしぼんでしまう花ですが、この句の朝顔はとても元気で、生き生きしています。 その音で目がさめる作者も、きっと早起きで、朝の光の中でわくわくしているのでし ょう。色とりどりの大きな朝顔が、ぱっとひらくようすを鮮やかに描いた絵も、この すてきな俳句とよく合っていて見事です。
What sound does a morning glory make when it blooms? Is it a 'pop', a 'whoosh', or perhaps a very quiet 'shoo'? It's a sound that shouldn't really be audible, yet this verse makes one want to strain one's ears and imagine it.Morning glories are flowers that open large in the morning only to wilt quickly, yet the morning glory in this verse is full of vigour and vitality. The author, awakened by its sound, must surely be an early riser, filled with excitement in the morning light. The vividly painted illustration, depicting large, colourful morning glories bursting open, perfectly complements this splendid haiku.
