「冬の夜」という言葉は、とてもよくこの句の世界に合っています。もしここが「春の夜」なら、これから旅が始まるワクワクした気持ちに。「夏の夜」なら、そのワクワクがもっと広がって、自由な気分に。「秋の夜」は、なんとなくさびしい気持ちになります。でも「冬の夜」は、まわりがとても静かで、空気もひんやりしています。そんな中で、飛行機のエンジンの低い音が響くと、その音だけがはっきりと聞こえてきて、飛行機の存在がとても強く感じられます。離陸と着陸をくらべると、やっぱりエンジンの音が大きくなる離陸の瞬間がぴったりだと思います。絵の中では、寒い色の空に向かって、白い飛行機が飛び立っています。その白さがとてもきれいで、まっすぐな気持ちを感じさせます。

The phrase 'winter night' fits perfectly within this haiku's world. Were it 'spring night', it might evoke the excitement of a journey beginning. 'Summer night' would amplify that thrill into a feeling of freedom. 'Autumn night' might bring a vague sense of loneliness. But 'winter night' is deeply quiet, the air crisp and cool. Amidst this, the low rumble of an aeroplane's engines resonates, the sound alone becoming distinctly clear, making the aircraft's presence felt with great intensity. Comparing take-off and landing, the moment of take-off, when the engine noise grows louder, feels just right. In the picture, a white aeroplane takes flight towards the cold-toned sky. Its whiteness is very beautiful, evoking a sense of straightforwardness.
